Asking audiences to develop empathy, dialogue and transformation in order to transcend the boundaries of traditional theatre.

Artist Manifesto

When developing theatre, my first priority is kindness. Valuing every voice involved in the process is integral. Every story told or heard should be dealt with respect and sensitivity. Rehearsals are spaces of exploration, where ideas can flourish without judgement and real work can be made that will predominately tell truths to ourselves and to the people who need to hear it. I make work to make a difference, to shine a light on voices unheard and boost them to an audience that doesn’t normally hear them.

York Theatre Royal: Takeover

During the week of 27th May to the 31st, York St John Students entered York Theatre Royal and made it their own, putting on several events and performing in shows, along with working backstage and front, the Theatre had been taken over.

I was on the wrap around team and led the event ‘Battle of the Bands’. Communicating back and forth with artists from across the country was challenging, and arranging times and locations for equipment to be dropped off and picked up proved difficult. However, in the end, I managed to create a successful event, which left the audience cheering for one more song from the up-and-coming band, ‘Destroya’. In hindsight, events management was an incredible experience, and the staff at Theatre Royal were extremely helpful in providing a space for my vision to come to life. Wrap Around was also about the general look and feel of the festival. From the music to the lighting, ordering decorations whilst sticking to the budget and theme was my responsibility. This was a refreshing experience, as I was given a level of creative control that allowed many ideas to flourish, and I believe the theme of disco was heavily conveyed throughout. There was one significant challenge when it came to event management and wrap around, and this was during the ‘Cabaret’ event. There was a lack of communication and planning, and because of this, a comedian was booked on to perform inappropriate humour in the foyer, in front of an audience that could have found it distasteful. During this time, I learnt a lot about risk assessments, even when it involved the reputation of the theatre. To combat this, we served a public apology to the audience, and a risk report form was filled out, containing the information of the event, so something like this doesn’t happen again. Working on wrap around was a constant challenge, that had myself and a few of my colleagues doubling our workload at times, but it was an experienced that I enjoyed thoroughly. I will use the many valuable skills that I learnt during this period when booking my own events in the future, especially when it involves the budgeting, communication, and the intricate planning and preparation that is needed in order to develop a successful event.

And just like that, Edinburgh Fringe 2025 has come to a close — what an unforgettable journey! I’m incredibly proud to have performed in two powerful productions, A Chance Beyond the Sea and Void. Both shows came to life on stage in ways that exceeded expectations, sparking meaningful conversations and resonating deeply with audiences.

It’s been a privilege to be part of such an electric festival atmosphere, surrounded by creativity, risk-taking, and community.
